1. Cyclothon And Yamuna Clean Up On International Volunteer Day 2014 – Delhi

Delhi’s biggest cyclothon is being organized by United Nations Volunteer India in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, the United Nations Development Programme, Sweccha and media partner, NDTV. Join them on Sunday, 14 December in a Cyclothon for Clean India as hundreds of residents of Delhi cycle around the city drawing attention to the role we can all play in cleaning the Yamuna. So volunteer your time now. To register click here

‘Make Change Happen’ in Delhi will feature a cyclothon; a clean-up of the Yamuna bank at Kudsia Ghat and a music concert, featuring Swarathma, Tritha and Mame Khan feat. The Trio.

1. Appeal Please Help Stop ‘Kolubete’ – Bengaluru

In the ritual hunting festival called, ‘Kolubete’, thousands of innocent wild animals are mercilessly killed while lakhs of villagers stand by to watch the event. This year, hunting festivals are planned to be held on December 18th 2014, 25th December, 28th December and 4th January 2014.

Shri Ajay Misra, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Karnataka Forest Department has issued directions to stop the hunting festival in all districts of Karnataka. Along with this, an awareness programme is planned to be conducted with support from Forest Department, People for Animals (PFA), Kengeri, CUPA WRRC, Paradigm Shift activity center, Happy Vegans foundation, Karuna International, Karnataka Animal Rights Activist Group, Prani Daya Sangh, Vishwa Prani Kalyan Mandal and Watchers India Trust. Your support in stopping the Hunting Festival by volunteering and bringing in volunteers to be a part of this awareness campaign will greatly help in making this Campaign successful. 1. Magh Mela Festival

Magh Mela is known for bathing of hundreds of thousands of devout Hindus in the rivers. Organized on the banks of Sangam (the meeting point of Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati) in Allahabad, Hindu mythology considers the origin of Magh Mela to be the beginning of the universe. Organized every year in the month of Magh (January-February), this festival is also known as the mini Kumbh mela. While the Kumbh mela, considered to be the largest peaceful gathering in the world, is organized once every three years, Magh mela is an annual event. 3. Pushkar Camel Festival

This annual five-day (af)fair with lots of cultural events is much more than just a livestock fair. Held in Pushkar town of Rajasthan, it is one of the largest camel fairs in the world. Every year, lakhs of visitors witness the amazing carnival full of colour and celebrations. Amusing competitions like “matka phod”, “longest moustache”, etc. are some of the interesting attractions. Pushkar lake, where the event is held, attracts a large number of tourists during this festival.

4. Torgya Monastery Festival, Tawang

Celebrated by the Monpa tribe at the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, this three-day annual festival is all about dances, amazing performances and grand celebrations. The festival signifies the destruction of evil spirits and harmful forces. A group of monks dressed in splendid robes and masks perform the choreographed dance in the courtyard of the monastery. Chamm, a choreographed sacred dance, is the main attraction of the festival followed by the amazing feast.

5. International Kite festival, Ahmedabad

One of the most famous events in the country, the International Kite Festival is an annual event that attracts kite connoisseurs from across the world. The festival marks the day when winter ends, which is known as Makar Sankranti. It is considered to be one of the most important harvest days in India. Also called Uttarayan, Ahmedabad has been hosting this magnificent festival since 1989 and has seen some of the most amazing kites in its sky. A master kite maker and flyer, Rasulbhai can even fly 500 kites on a single string. Various kite making and painting competitions and workshops are other attractions of the day. The rooftop of every house is crowded and there are so many kites flying that you can barely see the clear sky.

6. Hampi Festival

Puppet shows, folk dance, mud wrestling, classical music performances are some of the amazing events at the festival. 7. The Story Of Light Festival, Panjim

This unique and probably India’s first science-meets-art festival in Goa will host 45 artists and scientists from around the world who will put up installations in the public spaces of Goa. The festival will be full of visual play, dance performances, installations with light and colour, photography workshops, and live projections. It aims to raise awareness about the breakthroughs in light science, its applications and its importance to mankind. In an effort to unravel all the mysteries of light, scientists and artists from all over the world are congregating in Panjim for the unusual event.

8. Khajuraho Dance Festival, Madhya Pradesh

The perfect combination of culture and heritage, Khajuraho Dance festival organized by the Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad at the splendid Khajuraho temples is a week-long annual festival. The event features classical dance performances like Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali. Even if you are not very well versed with classical dances, this is an event worth experiencing for its sheer beauty.

9. Bihu Festival

The Bihu festival is organized in three parts every year in Assam – Bhogali Bihu, Rongali Bihu and Kongali Bihu. Considered to be the most important festival of the region, it involves Bihu folk dance and songs and represents three different sets of culture. People of Assam come together for this festival irrespective of their caste, religion and faith.

10. Hornbill Festival

The most popular festival of Nagaland, the Hornbill festival showcases the stunning beauty of the state and the rich culture worth witnessing. Organized in the first week of December, it is also called the “festival of festivals”. The festival is named after the bird, Indian Hornbill, and the aim of this festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions. Colourful performances, displays of art and craft, cultural shows, Naga wrestling and traditional archery are just a few of the activities in this grand carnival.

1. Art For Concern – Delhi

Art for Concern is an exhibition featuring traditional and folk art, organised by Secure Giving in an attempt to showcase and preserve these indigenous art forms. The exhibition will showcase miniature art in various styles- Madhubani from Bihar, Matani Pachedi from Gujarat, Phad and Pichwai from Rajasthan, Gond from Madhya Pradesh, Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh, Bronzes from Kumbakonam and Kalighat paintings from Kolkata.

After Canada, Australia, New Zealand and USA, the first ‘Walk for Values’ is being organized in India on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at The Great India Place, Noida. The objective of this Walkathon is to raise the awareness about the relevance of ‘Human Values’ in today’s society.

The ‘Walk for Values’ isn’t a fund raiser. The event primarily seeks participation to make the residents of Delhi-NCR conscious about their role in realization of universal peace by pledging to practice positive values which will ultimately lead to a more caring and compassionate society. The Walk will witness more than 2000 participants from various institutions in and around Delhi-NCR. 5. Jyoti Bhatt: Photographs from Rural India – Mumbai

Fueled by a desire to document the fast-disappearing traditions of folk and tribal cultures, Bhatt has been travelling across the nation for the last 50 years to produce these iconic photographs. Bhatt, trained as a painter at the M.S. University of Baroda, uses the camera for documentation as well as a means of self-expression. 3. Gender Talk: Big Hero, Size Zero – Chennai

This is an event to launch the book to bring together a cross-section of young people for a live and lively interaction on gender issues that concern them.

To set the tone, it will begin with a panel discussion between the authors Sowmya Rajendran and Anusha Hariharan, both involved with research on gender issues, and human rights lawyer Gulika Reddy, who started Schools of Equality, an organisation that works with schools to effect social change.

These weekend photo walks act not only as an avenue for the budding wildlife photography enthusiasts to explore and refine their photography skills but also is an excellent medium for documentation of the biodiversity in and around the city life. Data collected during the photo walks by the DCPians are subjected to authentication by the experts and constitute a significant contribution to DCP Explorer’s expanding countrywide data base of biodiversity documentation, which can prove to be extremely helpful for the scientific community in the long run. Dr. R. Bhanumathi, an environmental educationist with more than 30 years experience and deep involvement in the art of puppetry. She has done her doctoral research on the ‘Status of Shadow Puppetry and Puppeteers of South India’. She is presently the Managing Trustee, Pavai Centre for Puppetry, a Chennai based charitable trust dedicated to the art of Puppetry. Pavai organizes and conducts various puppet based projects for children, teachers, volunteers, animators, and others. Her talk will cover different facets of traditional shadow puppetry including geographical distribution, preparation of puppets, performances and status of puppeteers. More details.
